Drops of heart are a four piece band from Russia. They combine beautiful melodies, punchy guitar riffs and extremely powerful harsh vocals. I recently caught up with them for a chat.
How did you guys all meet, and what made you form a band?
Firstly, we want to say that our band now started Drops of Heart in 2009, when all this was started, we were all in completely different bands. There were a few young guys who wanted to play cool metal music. Our vocalist Den (today he is the only one, who was in the band from the beginning) gathered them together in one collective, and they began to try to play. It was given with difficulty at first. Some time passed and the first tracks began to appear, then the first demo was recorded, and then the debut EP. But not all participants were eager to grow up as the musicians. Therefore, the line up of the band changed very often, and in 2010 the group was completely disbanded. The turning point in the history of the drops of heart was the year 2012, when Den met guitarist Vadim Nizamov (at that time they played together in deathcore band called Severed Seconds) and they decided to revive the group, because both were eager to play melodic metal. In fact, this is the beginning of our true story.
For those that don’t know your band, how would you describe your band?
Drops of Heart is a Russian melodic metal. Extreme, atmospheric and sometimes lyrical. We are inspired by a lot of things, so, in our opinion, our music is multifaceted.
Any band you would like to tour with (that you haven’t already toured with)?
Sunless Rise and Sympuls-E. These bands as well as we play modern melodic metal, and it’s just a brilliant music. If you like this genre, be sure to check them out. And they’re just cool guys. By the way, guitarist of Sunless Rise, Alexander Becker, made 2 our official videos.
Can we expect a headline tour in the near future?
Definitely not. Our main task now is to put all our efforts into creating the second album. We have a huge work to do, and only after that we will talk about tours. But we can’t wait to present the new material to the public – we think that this is the best thing we did.
You recently released the video for the single «Аманда». What is the song about?
The mysterious title “Amanda” conceals the story of battle of the crew of seamen and raging storm. On the one hand, the song shows the insignificance of the human being before the forces of nature, on the other – it reveals the human will as a powerful weapon capable of crushing any difficulties.
You are set to release your new maxi-single. What was the hardest track for you to write, and why?
The nearest thing we are going to release is a maxi-single called «В Сиянии Звезд» (“In the Starlight”). Those people who didn’t follow our band should know that the last year we were busy with the release of a series of maxi-singles, and “В Сиянии Звезд” will be the final one before the full-length album. And that’s why we decided to work on it as seriously and scrupulously as possible: it will have a great guest vocal (we will not disclose the secret and say who it is) and a completely different approach to recording and mixing. Thereby we want to achieve the best result. The work has been going on for a long time, but you will be able to hear it very soon.
What is your favourite track on the «В Сиянии Звезд» and why?
Inasmuch as the maxi-single will traditionally include 4 tracks – 3 versions of the title track (Russian, English and instrumental) and one bonus track, the choice will be complicated, huh. We guess, this is the Russian version, because we can uncover the emotional component of the lyrics in full. And also because the guest vocalist also sang in Russian, not knowing our language, it sounds funny and really awesome at the same time.
How do you think your fans will react to «В Сиянии Звезд»?
We think they will just be delighted. First, it has everything for which our fans love us, and secondly, there are some bold experiments and a new breath.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Probably, this is the most interesting question! We love very diverse music, but all of us have grown up in melodic metal bands, such as In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, Insomnium and so on. But we just adore atmospheric genres (post-metal, ambient, trip-hop, etc.), and so in our music you can hear the influence of such bands as Alcest, Maybeshewill or Anathema.
Have you always wanted to create music?
Our composers, Vadim and Igor, have been engaged in music since childhood. And they always wanted to realize themselves as real musicians, who can create something new. Despite all the difficulties that persecuted musicians in Russia, they unhesitatingly went to their goal. And, as you can see, they achieved it.
If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing?
We would be engaged in what we do in our daily life right now. Each of us has work and various hobbies. We don’t focus on just music and try to develop in many ways. For example, our drummer Artem works in the construction field, and Igor is a fitness instructor.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
As we have already said, this is the creation of a new album. We do not want to talk about any time frame, because we want to bring our new creation to the ideal. Presumably, it’s expected in 2018. But, of course, we will not be silent until the release and will continue to rejoice our listeners with interesting news.
