Interview with Charly

Charly is a French singer, musician and composer based in Los Angeles, California, USA. I recently caught up with her for a chat.

How would you describe your project?

This project “Film Scores” is a solo project regrouping music for films that I created from the past few years. It is not a band project. I got two band on the side “Charly&Faust” and “The Sutra”. You can find all the information’s about those projects on my website www.charlysolo.com

Any band you would like to tour with (that you haven’t already toured with)?

I don’t think I will tour with this project. If you are not Hans Zimmer it is kind of difficult to tour with music you created for films. Nobody is going to come see that *laughs*.

Can we expect a headline tour in the near future?

Maybe with my band Charly&Faust, but not for my solo projects. It is way too soon to plan that.

You are set to release your new EP “Film Scores” what was the hardest track for you to write, and why?

They were all tricky but fun to write. Since this EP contains films scores that I created, I had to serve movies and filmmakers ideas, which was sometimes sending me to places I never had been before in term of music creation. I had to create in genres I wasn’t really familiar with like for “Another Day, Another Lie”. I also had to create a single track with different dynamics and moods like for “The Boy in The Mirror”.

What is your favorite track on the EP “Film Scores” and why?

I don’t know. I really like “Another Day, Another Lie” for the lyrics and the production part, but I think in term of emotions and musical ideas I prefer “The Boy in The Mirror”.

How do you think your fans will react to “Film Scores?

This EP is not really for people that follow me in my artist path. I will be really happy if they enjoy it as well for sure, but this EP is more like a resume to show my work to the world as a film composer.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

The Who, Patty Smith, Tracy Chapman, Janis Joplin, Ray Lamontagne, etc.

Have you always wanted to create music?

Yes. It is the only think I can do all day and night long without being tired of it.

If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing?

This EP and my solo project. Which I do even if I am in two bands.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

I am now recording my artist solo project, which should be release in a few months. I just did the photoshoot for the cover yesterday. You will be able to see the results on my Instagram @charly._music!
